The Expertise-Reversal Effect

Learning Goal: The learning goal of this learning object is to increase knowledge of the expertise-reversal effect and how it can be applied to multimedia instructional design

Pre-training:

Recall what you know about cognitive load theory, working memory, and how schemas are constructed in long-term memory and put into action.

Are you well-versed in cognitive load theory and the construction of schema in long-term memory? If yes, skip directly to the second video. If not, watch the first video before you watch the second.

Explain to yourself (or make a comment below) what happens, in terms of cognitive load and working memory, when someone explains something to you that you already know very well.

Were you specific? Try using what happens when someone tries to instruct you how to prepare your favourite meal.

Activity Question (answer in the comment section):

How would you design the presentation of this material differently for more novice learners? More expert?

Expert Activity:
Create a short video on a topic from your interests or practice that would be effective for someone of similar expertise as yourself. Post the link in the comment section.
